I think the reason the male is more decorative is that the female choses her mate so the male has to up his game in order to be chosen as a mating partner. Taken from “ The evolution of Beauty”by Richard Prum

We get dragonflies at our pond but they’re so much smaller lately. They lay eggs in the pond which I’m sure the fish immediately gobble up.

There are a few spottings of these guys in the Yucatan but mostly north. The northern dragonflies do seem bigger to me. Another research project! Thanks Jeanine!
