It looked like a very rewarding experience. The Nubians seem to have settled off the desert. I find it interesting that all disputes are settled by the elders. You also said that gold must be presented to the in-laws, how much are we talking about. If the wedding lasts a week the wedding planner might be getting part of that gold.
Good one Paul. A bunch of us are sitting around here in the Cairo airport and nobody knows how much gold it takes. But if a girl has too many sisters it might put her out of reach for some of those fellas!
Thanks Jeanine there’s a lot more to this story. But you have to start somewhere. Yes the ancient Nubians were a very early civilization. So interesting how the Nile provided both a Means of survival and the desert provided a defense.
I've been fascinated by their culture and other mid-eastern early early cultures. On one documentary I saw, an indie, the narrator and guide were traveling across the desert (forget which one) and there were mounds off in the distance (multiple times). He inquired as to what they were--the guide said (in effect) some earlier civilization but we have no idea who they were. No data, no writing -of course- no nothing b/c the sands of time had erased all but the mounds and that country had no funds to excavate or attempt to find out. There is so little we truly know going back than more than, what, 6000 yrs? Maybe more w/ Vikings?
I read in the app. This is all wonderful. What a fabulous culture those people have got in that they aren't being fooled into 'modernising' to no purpose. Those pets. Yikes. David you should be in charge of World Broadcasting. You (+others like you) show us The World is NOT full of strife, destruction and ugliness. There is beauty and humanity aplenty. Thanks.
Awesome trip, David. Thank you for bringing us along.
Thanks for traveling along Sue!
Safe travels!
Landed finally after 24 hours en route to SNOW!
Crocodiles as pets, amazing. The photos of the birds are incredible.

The ancient Nubians intrigue me. Great for you to be there.
