Interesting. My husband likes to throw in the concept of continental drift when dealing with ancient worlds and global climates. Okay! Another thing: the movement to other continents on land. Polynesians were not only adept sailors, their boats were big enough for whole families to live on during these journeys. If there was a spit of land to camp on, sure ... get out and stretch the old sea legs; otherwise, with the escort of sea turtles I mentioned in your previous articles, they just kept following the coastlines. Also, ocean sea travel was something they had mastered and didn't fear.
Peoples across the planet have been sailors, including those from the Middleast and western Europe. We are learning more about the Vikings' travels to the Atlantic Coast and further inland, but the Basques were quite the sea navigators. Moors wandered up the European coast, landing and socializing with people in Ireland and Scandinavia. (Black Irish and Swarthy Danes.)
I enjoyed this post about how people were brave or confident enough in their abilities to venture out into the world. From my family's research we were in Scotland and Ireland in the mid 1400's on my father's side. On my mom's side the last time I went to a reunion the people doing the trace said they would have to go to another direction because the people they were tracing just disappeared. I asked my grandfather what he meant, and he said, " they probably got hung for stealing horses".
Thanks Paul. Yes I’ve heard that one, “hung for stealing horses.” Or they disappeared because they kept on moving west and ended up in the Gold fields of California or in Alaska.
Were they Protestant? The Protestants who immigrated after the English King Charles I attempted to force the Presbyterians back into the Church of England called themselves Scotch Irish in North America to distinguish themselves from the Catholic Irish. They came from Ulster, but many families were originally from Scotland.
It's later in history but relatively recent research has shown most Elite Egyptian Mummies, the royals and their high up court officials have got high levels of cocaine in their remains. They were stoned! So as that drug whatever it comes from only grows in South America + did back then that means that human trade was getting it to Egypt and after considering all the likely routes the historians THINK that it was taken ACROSS the Pacific to China or such and thence along the Silk Roads routes. Not high speed supply but I guess if it was on a continual rolling basis then there would always be some on the way. And I think it pretty durable stuff so the time factor didn't matter much. This is not quite on topic I know but it does suggest that human ingenuity can cope with even a limitless ocean!
I need to look that up. I did read about many mummies that had evidence of tobacco, which was found only in North America, which lead to some crazy theories. But evidence seems to be that the heavy smoking of Egyptians in much more recent times caused contamination of the mummies. Thanks Jane I will look into this a bit deeper~!

They were Scotch Irish on my father’s side and English on my mothers. I will have to get my book out and check on it, “The McCutchen Trace”

Let me know. I only read it casually. Both tobacco + cocaine. Oh dear, was it the tourists!
