Red sky at night, Sailor’s delight.
Red sky at morning, Sailors take warning!
The sky was just as red tonight as it was this morning. But even though the old rhyme says “red sky at night sailor’s delight,” I wouldn’t be too delighted to be out on the water right now. The wind here is dying a bit, but out on the lake it’s still honking.
What’s left of Helene is stalled out over the Ohio River in Western Kentucky and southern Indiana, but the effects are being felt here, especially out on Lake Erie, where I hope the Sailors have taken warning.
The waves are 5-8 feet right now, and the wind has been howling steadily all day out there on the lake between 30 and 50 mph.
When the wind is from this direction it sweeps down the whole lake, from Niagara at the east end to the Michigan shore, causing the water to pile up in the west end of the lake.
Tomorrow when the wind dies down the water will all rush back to the northeast, sloshing around as if Lake Erie were a big bathtub. Hopefully someone is at the club checking and adjusting the dock lines of the boats as they first rise, then fall as the water rushes back east.
I was outside today putting up deer guards to keep the deer from rubbing their antlers on the bark of the young trees, which damages threatens the tree’s health, when this small butterfly dropped out of the sky, in need of a rest after riding the strong wind on his migration south.
The Common Buckeye, or Junonia coenia, is not a very big butterfly, but I think they’re very pretty. The Buckeye migrates south to Peninsular Florida every year. This one still has a ways to go. Like some of us, they cannot tolerate snow or freezing temperatures.
There have been a few raptors and vultures migrating through, but we haven’t hit the peak yet.
I neglected to mention some of the other awards that Shōgun and its actors received in yesterday’s post. Besides winning for best Drama Series and best Director, Hiroyuki Sanaa, shown above, won Best Actor Emmy for his portrayal of Lord Yoshii Toranaga. Shōgun garnered 18 Emmys in all.
Brilliant Grandson #1 led his team to victory tonight, scoring the final touchdown with a quarterback sneak from three yards out! It’s always fun to see the grandkids do well. His team has had its troubles this year, which makes this long-awaited first victory especially sweet. Our two oldest grandkids are high school seniors. College looms ahead. What an adventure awaits! We’re so proud of all of them!
I’ve got a wood splitter reserved for this morning (Saturday). Going to try to cut and split up a cherry tree that came down earlier this year in some big wind, with help of course. The goal is to get some nice cherry campfire wood. Hope to have some pictures to share.
I hope you have a wonderful weekend, wherever you are and whatever you do~!
And don’t work too hard! Be sure to take some time for yourself by going on a nice walk, read or listen to a good book, and chill with some good music. You deserve it~!
Thanks for the great comments and for hitting the ❤️~!
I do miss high school football when my boys played. The yelling, popcorn and of course hot dogs. Both of my boys went into the military and when they got out the oldest went to college and the youngest went to work for a John Deere company. He now recruits kids for trade school because there is a need for technicians (we used to call them mechanics) working in the farming industry.
I’m not sure if Cherrywood works like applewood. If you slow cook anything in applewood, it’s incredible. I had a friend who used to make fresh salmon and also lamb and one of those big green eggs using applewood and it was to die for. They served it at my stepson‘s wedding and the Lamb disappeared quickly. You may want to consider using that cherry wood to smoke something if you’re into that kind of barbecuing.
