Those sandhills are running late!! They better beat (black feet) wings down here right away. Sandhills are already feeding along our coast in their traditional wintering grounds, as are the whooping cranes near Port Aransas.
One of our T-Day dinner guests is already preparing for his annual leading of ‘bird walks’ during the Whooping Crane Festival next February.
It’s a Big Deal down here along our coast, bringing in birders from all over the US and even other countries.
Recently, I came to the end of a binge-watch of an old TV series, Young Riders, about the Pony Express. It really illustrated how difficult it was back then just to get a simple message to someone, even if they were at the other end of town. You couldn't just pick up the phone and call them. You had to walk, run, or ride your horse or wagon to get to them. So, those poor horses stayed saddled and ready to ride, it seemed, all the time.
A couple of YouTubers I follow Luke + Julie at Mapperton in Dorset are hoping to establish European cranes (is that the same as storks) on their land. I think the idea is they can fly freely not enclosed and hopefully they will stay and breed. I hope their plan succeeds. Somewhere in the big area of Salisbury Plain there might be a big bird, like a European version of the Turkey,it's called a Bustard and there was a project to reestablish them so last I heard they were thriving but way off the beaten track. I'm not having a tree, even a tiny one but I'll be decorating but not till mid next week.

That’s what I thought! Well this cold snap should make them want to get warm. Yay!!!
They wanted to hang around for a photo op.
Most likely!
